Balyarr Open Learning Centre
The Balyarr Open Learning Centre is a state of the art multi-media facility targeting and engaging youth and the Broome and Kimberley community.
The Balyarr Open Learning Centre located at Goolarri Media in Broome is equipped with 20 PC's with high speed broadband internet access and a multitude of multimedia software. The Open Learning Centre looks at driving community engagement through a fresh approach and popular form of culture - digital media.
Offering informal training for community members the OLC integrates into learning a variety of popular multimedia tools such as animation, gaming, video and social networks in order to engage participants. In the future we aim to involve participants in the researching, recording and storyboarding of cultural stories and issues to production of the stories using various mutlimedia tools in a format that will reach young people.
By giving participants a meaningful role in the planning process they will gain a sense of ownership of the project and an enriched and deeper learning experience. All content produced by participants through the activities undertaken in the Balyarr Open Learning Centre can be publicly showcased and acknowledged as the participants work, building confidence and self respect in participants.
